Fishburne Military School’s dedication to a solid STEM education permeates the curriculum and classroom culture in a number of ways. Below are a few examples of how FMS is embracing STEM to ensure that our young men are equipped to succeed and lead in college and beyond.

IT Fundamentals and Technology Skills

Aligned with Cambridge IGCSE ICT and IGCSE Computer Science and CompTIA IT Fundamentals.

This course designed to develop a strong foundation in basic technology skills.

  • Scratch, Python, Logo, and TI BASIC programming languages are used in this course.
  • Students also learn to disassemble and assemble a PC and use a variety of virtual machines.
  • Students learn how to install and configure various operating systems. Windows and Linux operating systems are emphasized.
  • Students also make use of the Raspberry Pi and QEMU Raspberry Pi emulator.

Introduction to Coding and Computer Science Using Python

Aligned with Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science, CompTIA A+, and EDX.

For significantly advanced students there are opportunities to earn college credit for this course as a dual enrollment course via MIT Edx and Charter Oak State College (3 hrs. of undergraduate college credit from Charter Oak State College). It is offered both as a regular high school course and Dual
Enrollment course as needed.

Basic Computer Technician Training (CompTIA A+ Certification prep. course)

Aligned with CompTIA A+ and Piedmont Virginia Community College.

Upon successful completion of this course, individuals will be able to earn a technical certificate from the community college demonstrating their mastery of the content.

When the individual passes this final examinations, he will be a CompTIA A+ Certified Computer Technician. This opens up many entry level employment opportunities for those entering the work place and particularly the IT industry. Students will learn how to troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade PC’s and other common devices, etc. during their studies.

3D Modeling and 3D Printing/Manufacturing

In this course, students learn how to use Blender, and how to design and produce 3D printed objects. This course is closely aligned with Tuft’s University Blender course. Those with a background in Python programming can apply their skills to the Blender environment to greatly expand the functionality of Blender. We have also taken the liberty of teaching students to use Unity and write UnityScript to develop simple 3D video games and 3D animations using the Blender software. Students learn basic CAD (Computer Assisted Drafting) and CAM (Computer Assisted Manufacturing) in this course.

Introduction to Cybersecurity

Aligned with CompTIA Security+ curriculum along with PVCC’s CompTIA Security+ courses.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of a computer network, and a very detailed introduction into how to protect a network from attack. Military issues regarding protecting networks from cyber terrorism and basic elements of cyber warfare will also be introduced. The student who successfully completes this course will be able to earn Security+ certificates from Piedmont Virginia Community College, and will be on his way to preparing for the CompTIA Network+ and Security+ exams for additional professional certificates that are recognized by the IT industry.
